On October 11, the 10th anniversary of International Day of the Girl was celebrated around the world. This day was named in 2011 by the United Nations General Assembly and strives to bring attention to girls’ rights and the many challenges they face. The day’s goal is to encourage young, female empowerment and recognize their own human rights. These rights include education, to be free from violence, to be healthy, and to not be married before the age of 18. Through the past 10 years, girls have had increasing opportunities and chances to stand up and have a say about stereotypes and gender inequality. While Covid-19 and international conflict have slowed and regressed some progress, the female population stays determined – using creativity and courage to make changes in their communities, and eventually, the world. Young girls are becoming inspired and ready to take on the next set of challenges coming their way, paving the path for many generations to come. Girls deserve to be healthy, safe, and educated as they grow. Nurtured in a positive environment, they have the ability to make a difference in the world for other women and girls. Like UN Secretary-General António Guterres said, “Investing in girls is investing in our common future.” How you can help + get involved: 1. Share: Share articles, videos, and posts that promote female change makers and the organizations that support them! This can be on social media sites like Instagram and Twitter, or even a shared story between you and your parents. 2. Engage: Engage with officials, policymakers, and leadership to bring attention to gender inequality! Bring mental health, education, and so much more to the attention of people who can make decisions at a higher level. 3. Support: Support organizations like the Human Rights Watch, the United Nations, and Plan International which support girls’ rights and can help inform you and others. 4. Commit: Commit to raising awareness and working with others towards a common goal! Take the time to educate yourself and others, stay determined, and be strong!
